Celebrating 80 Years of Service in the Oakley and Bethel Island Communities

In August 2025 Ironhouse marked 80 years of providing water recycling services to our community. Since July 2, 1945, when our district’s founders presented their vision for improvement to county supervisors, we have made significant progress. The creation of the sanitary district was unanimously supported by Oakley's registered voters, reflecting their commitment to community health and welfare. Three decades later, Bethel Island joined the Distict to benefit from these enhanced services.

Today, Ironhouse is at the forefront of water recycling, boasting a modern facility and a commitment to continual innovation in water reuse.

About Us

Ironhouse Sanitary District, founded in 1945, employs 30 field and office staff to serve over 47,000 customers in Oakley and Bethel Island. Our Water Recycling Facility, north of Main Street in downtown Oakley, treats about 2.6 million gallons of water daily using advanced technologies.

Innovative Design

Designed in-house by our engineer, Ironhouse's Water Recycling Facility opened in 2011 and soon received a sanitation industry award for technological advancement. The environmentally sound, strictly regulated plant uses a membrane bioreactor (MBR) process for filtration and disinfects water with ultraviolet light.

Where Does the Name Ironhouse Come From?

The District's name honors the historic Ironhouse School, a small rural schoolhouse that once served families in what is now our territory. When the Board of Directors named the district, Ironhouse was the natural choice.
