Maintenance crews were kept busy throughout New Year's weekend when fierce storms battered the Jersey Island levee, eroding protective rock slope covers and threatening to send waves over the levee tops. The storm that began Dec. 31, 2005, and continued on New Year's Day, featured high winds and heavy rains. Crews worked many hours to repair the damaged rocks and prevented what could have become a costly levee break.

The photos that follow illustrate the extent of the damage and document some of the repair work. ISD thanks the workers who gave up time with their families on the long holiday weekend to keep our levees safe.
